Gracie Jiu Jitsu / BJJ / Brazilian Jiu Jitsu / Self Defence
This class is a pure Gracie Jiu Jitsu program that teaches women how to use leverage, technique and timing to combat size and strength. The difference between our women only Jiu Jitsu program and our co-ed Jiu Jitsu program is that we place a greater emphasis on the self defence aspects of Gracie Jiu Jitsu for women.
Jiu Jitsu, which means the “gentle art” in Japanese, is a grappling based self defence system that emphasizes the proper application of technique, leverage, timing and patience to win over strength and aggression. It teaches the student to use their attacker’s energy against them, rather than opposing it head-on. Essentially, Jiu Jitsu gives a smaller individual the ability to defend themselves against a larger and stronger opponent in a stand up confrontation or on the ground. ‘Gracie’ or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the name given to the style of Jiu Jitsu that was developed by the Gracie family in Brazil and is often referred to by the acronym BJJ.
Here at the academy, our approach is balanced and methodical. Our curriculum focuses on technique that is effective in self defence and competition. We teach our students defence against strikes, the clinch, take-downs and throws, sweeps, chokes, joint locks and various other submission holds. Our Academy is the official St. John’s representative of the Victory Jiu Jitsu Team and The Jiu Jitsu Global Federation.
Students looking to learn this revolutionary martial art can do so in a very well structured setting here at the academy.
Our lineage is Helio Gracie > Rickson Gracie > Shane Rice > Michael Foley.
