Opening day:
Adam Mercer and Zack Hawco both lost close decisions to tough opponents. Adam was edged out in his Thaiboxing debut against a game opponent while Zack lost a tough battle in Full Contact.
Competing in a heavier weight class, Matt Kippenhuck went to an overtime round against a larger opponent where... he turned up the pressure and took the clean decision.
Nancy Hillier is the NEW CANADIAN AMATEUR LOW-KICK WOMENS CHAMPION!!!
Nancy fought a great bout against a girl with good boxing skills and cardio. Nancy stuck to her game plan and connected leg kicks off her punches and took it to her opponent hard in the third round. A decisive victory for the new Women's under 53kg champ.
Second day:
Steve Ryan started the morning off with a bang as he had an incredible bout with a tough opponent in the Low-kick division. The two athletes put on a show and had the whole venue packed and cheering them on at 10 o'clock on a Sunday morning. Steve lost a split decision giving him the silver medal in the -86kg division.
Jacinta 'Shaolin' Monk took silver as well in a great bout against a more experienced opponent. Jacinta used her reach advantage to land very clean punches while her opponent utilized good head movement and body kicks to take a super close decision win.
...AND YET ANOTHER NATIONAL TITLE AT OUR CLUB!!! Andrew Mercer took it to his opponent right away, dropping him to the mat twice in the first round and stopping him cold in the second round. Landing crushing right hands in both rounds off his opponenet's jab proved to be the winning game-plan and led him to his first national title.
In a heart breaking decision, Matt Kippenhuck took silver in the closest bout of the weekend. He battled through the division to make it to the final in a weight class above his own. The final was against the same opponent that edged out Zack Hawco the previous day and Matt executed a solid gameplan for three rounds only to lose by the smallest possible margin. He takes home the silver medal.
Joseph Cooper had a rollercoaster weekend when his bout was cancelled and then back on again in less than 24 hours. He kept his cool and got
the chance to compete on Sunday in an exhibition match against a much bigger heavyweight. He was busy all three rounds and looked slick while
landing punch-kick combinations. We're very proud of Joe's performance and looking forward to his next bout this Spring.
All together, the team took home two National titles, three silver medals and two bronze finishes. Look for the results of their next outing in April.
