Jiu Jitsu, which directly translates as the "gentle art," is a grappling based self defense system that emphasizes the proper application of technique, leverage and patience to win over strength and agression. It teaches the student to use their attacker's energy against them, rather than opposing it head-on. Essentially, Jiu Jitsu gives a smaller individual the ability to defend themself against a larger and stronger opponent in a stand up confrontation or on the ground. 'Gracie' Jiu Jitsu is the name given to the style of Jiu Jitsu that was developed by the Gracie family in Brazil.
Here at the academy, we follow the curriculum created by Professor Pedro Sauer and the Gracie Family, which consists of throws, sweeps, chokes, joint locks and various other submission holds. Professor Sauer is an 8th degree red and black belt master of Gracie Jiu Jitsu under Rickson and Helio Gracie from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. We are a proud member of the Pedro Sauer Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Association which allows us accessibility and constant interaction with some of the best jiu jitsu instructors and competitors in the world.
Seminars and Training Camps:
To date, our mats have played host to Pedro Sauer, Luis 'Limao' Heredia, Allen Hopkins, Jim Kelly, Matt Strack, Jorge Jiminez, Rob Lovi, and Keith Owen. Additionally, through the Pedro Sauer association, our instructors have had the opportunity to attend seminars and training sessions with Rickson Gracie, Relson Gracie, Rolker Gracie, Breno Angelo, Allan Manganello and the list is continually growing.
For developing an indepth knowledge of self defense, training for Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ) competition or developing a ground game for mixed martial arts, students looking to learn this revolutionary martial art can do so in a very well structured setting here at the academy.
